To calculate the average distance of the Stage 5 of the TdF there is some extra information to be provided.
- 7 times Stage 5 was a Team Time Trial
- 6 times Stage 5 was an Individual Time Trial
- 8 times Stage 5 was divided in two splits 5a and 5b
- 1 time Stage 5 was divided in three splits.
The average distance in kilometers of the Stage 5, has been 217.3 kms (135.1 miles)

Otherwise, if we do not consider the Time Trials, as normally those stages are shorter, then stage 5 average distance increases to 236.1 km (146.8 miles)

If we analyze the details of Stage 5 2022 edition of “Le Tour” we observe the amount of kilometers is lower than average, only 155 km (96 miles). As with most of the stages this year, 2022 stage 5 is shorter than the historic average.

As we can see in the graph below the amount of kilometers has decreased since the first editions of the Tour; moreover this year’s stage is one of the shortest non time trial stage 5.

- Longest 5th Stage: 482 km (300 miles). From 1919 and 1924 edition
- Shortest 5th Stage: 27.2 km (16.9 miles). 2021 edition
