Stage 8 of Tour de France 2022 will be finishing outside of France again. The stage will start in the city of Dole, in the Jura mountains and finish at the Olympic Capital of Lausanne (Switzerland). It will be a medium mountain stage ideal for a Breakthrough.

To calculate the average distance of the Stage 8 of the TdF there is some extra information to be provided.

  • 10 times Stage 8 was an Individual Time Trial
  • 3 times Stage 8 was a Team Time Trial
  • 4 times Stage 8 was divided in two splits 8a and 8b

The average distance in kilometers of the Stage 8, has been 202.4 kms (125.8 miles)

If we do not consider Time Trials, as those stages are shorter, then stage 8 average distance increases to 218.6 km (135.9 miles)

Stage number 8 of the 2022 edition of “Le Tour” will be shorter than the historical average with 184 kms (114 miles).

The year by year distance evolution of stage 8 of the Tour de France has been decreasing exactly as all the other stages. The reason is that in the early days of the Tour de France, stages were incredibly longer than what we are used to nowadays. 

However, as a curious fact of stage 8, is that from 1929 until 1948, only one stage was above 200 km. Something unusual during those years.

The eighth stage of the 2022 Tour de France will be a medium mountain stage from Dole to Lausanne in Switzerland. A medium mountain stage is the second most common type of stage in the 8th stage of Tour de France, with 23 times.

A Flat stage, with 63 times, is the most common type of stage on the eighth stage of the Tour de France.

The podium of cities that have been hosting start lines of Tour de France Stage 8 are:

  • Perpignan – 8 times
  • Grenoble – 6 times
  • Angers – 5 times

Bordeaux, main city of a famed wine-growing region, is clearly leading the host finish line cities of the 8th stage of Le Tour, with 9 times.  

Three cities are tight with 5 times being the finish line of the 8th stage:

  • Toulouse
  • Pau
  • Briançon

Stage 8 Tour de France anecdotes and important days

This section of the page will be a live document where I will be adding information that I gather through the time or that I receive in the comments.

1905 – The first two editions of the Tour de France had only 6 stages, consequently the first Stage 8 of Tour de France happened on the 3rd edition of Le Tour in 1905.
