A guide to the Tour de France
A mixed team time trial could be introduced in the 2019 UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire. It would be a relay event, in which a team of three men would ride the course first, then hand over to a team of three women. The lowest total time would win.
Since 2012, a TTT featuring trade teams has been part of the World Championships, with separate men's and women's events. That would be replaced by the mixed TTT, with national teams rather than trade teams taking part in the new event.
The information is reported in Belgian journal Het Nieuwsblad.
Exactly how the handover will happen isn't yet known, but we do know that there won't be an athletics-style baton.
Tom van Damme, President of the Belgian Cycling Federation, is enthusiastic about the idea. 'It's a new angle, and gives women's cycling a boost.'
The six host towns of the Tour de Yorkshire were announced on 25th October 2016. Harrogate is on the list, but whether it will be at a start or a finish won't be confirmed until December. Read about the six host towns of the Tour de Yorkshire 2017.
